Learn about our Award Winning Program
Our gardening and nutrition program utilizes the Great Garden Detective Adventure program, a standards-based gardening nutritional curriculum for 3 – 6 graders. Youth are exposed to materials and instructors from the Penn State University Master Gardeners. The Master Gardener volunteer program utilizes research-based information to educate the public and our communities on best practices in sustainable horticulture and environmental stewardship. These knowledgeable instructors assist youth in cultivating, maintaining, and harvesting the produce that is grown. The food grown in the garden is used for healthy cooking classes and is given away to the families. Twice monthly, BGCC staff and volunteers conduct healthy cooking classes to teach the youth how to prepare nutritious meals using vegetables from the garden. Class is provided two days per week.
